IN HUMAN TIME

Gentle, generous, perfect. Indifferent, unyielding, cruel. Part of being human is grappling with the mysteries of time. We struggle to understand time; we dream of mastering it. As a witness to the human experience of time, I am more satisfied by creative experiential exploration than by scientific theory. I feel what is true to us as sojourners in this world, even if messy and imprecise, is more true than what may be empirically proven.

This thesis describes my investigations of time in my work as a graphic designer. I explore the ways in which slowing down helps us to cross time’s boundaries. I discover that engaging the senses through designing by hand can shape the human experience of time, and the ways in which we communicate across time. Influenced by Sol LeWitt and Marian Bantjes, my media are fabric and embroidery floss, type, language, video and music. Through this work, I consider ways of designing and making with greater awareness of time’s meanings in my work.
