THE LITTER LETTER PROJECT
Litter is a huge issue in Louisiana while environmental education is severely lacking. There is signage addressing this issue, yet my community had a need for something more impactful. Living and practicing in a rural community offers an abundance of public space. The Litter Letter Project activates this space as a playground in which large scale typography made from local materials enlivens and is in dialog with the environment and the community.

My personal response to the issue quickly led to an affinity with a group of people that were ready to act as a catalyst to raise wider awareness. The litter is used to create the message. These messages using words such as PRIDE, THINK and RESPECT hope to instill a sense of community ownership. With time and collaboration The Litter Letter Project developed into a public program created by and for the community. The audience has continued to grow and the project now acts as a case study for other groups and organizations to base new projects. My thesis influenced behaviour using design (artifacts) and began a thought provoking conversation that addressed our collective litter issue.
